Famous Last Words: My final blog post

(Image taken from Sky and Telescope, originally from Interstellar)

I chose this specific image for a multitude of reasons. First off, I know this is one of your favorite movies! I remember you mentioning it in one of the comments you had on my story (it is one of my favorites as well). Secondly, I think it is very representative of my life right now, there is an entire universe ahead of me that I can not see into just yet but I must have a complete blind faith in myself and a higher power in order to make it though. It is scary. It is the unknown. I carry with me not just my own hopes but the dreams of my children to come. The blood that runs through my veins not only belongs to me but to those whose masterful stories I read only weeks earlier. There is a great responsibility upon us to learn from the past and preserve both what is right and wrong so that the future may learn from it. There is a great responsibility upon us to know the stories and values of our fellow humans.

I think this class is very important because it allows us to have fun while learning and ownership of history. I saw on multiple blogs the words "my family is from..." and it warmed my heart immensely. Thank you for being a great instructor and for having a course that allowed room for curiosity and mistakes. I think I learned more in this class than I did in any others I had this semester. When it comes to final words, I don't have the perfect ones at the tip of my tongue, but I have always imagined myself giving a speech in the future and ending it with this beautiful excerpt from Charles Dickens. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do:

"I see a beautiful city and a brilliant people rising from this abyss, and, in their struggles to be truly free, in their triumphs and defeats, though long to come, I see the evil of this time and of the previous time of which this is the natural birth, gradually making expiation for itself and wearing out. It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known." - Charles Dickens
