Week 13 - Story (Three College Students)

(Image taken from Odyssey Online)

There were once three college students that roamed the halls of their campus separately. They had made plans to go to their mutual friend's house later that evening to watch a movie.

The first of these college students was David, a Classics and Letters major who thoroughly enjoyed arguing with anyone. The second was Sam, a Biology major who tried to remain studying as much as she could. The third was Henry, a Human Relations major who was always aware of his time. As they each left their apartments that morning at 10, they knew they would have until 7 PM to finish their homework that night so that they could enjoy the movie night. Confident in their own beliefs, David, Sam, and Henry each made their way to the library in hopes of accomplishing their goal.

Getting to the library, however, would be no easy feat. In the middle of campus a rogue minister had situated himself to attract students to his events this week. They would last for hours and would fail any attempt to get homework done. The first student to cross paths with the minister was David. David was a tall and lanky person with a love of basketball. He also had an essay to complete before the end of this day. The minister, observing David's height, started the conversation off innocently. "Say," the minister inquired, "how tall are you?"

David responded proudly, "I am 6'4."

And with that response the rest of the trap was easy. The minister informed David of their all-day basketball tournament that was starting in 10 minutes. David, quickly incited, put his backpack down and joined the tournament, his essay not even started.

The next student to cross paths with the minister was Sam. The minister was confused as to how to approach Sam as he had little knowledge of science. Sam, carefully avoiding eye contact with any strangers, walked briskly past the elaborately set up basketball game yet hesitated when she saw hammocks set up by the oak trees. The minister narrowed in on her weakness. "A lovely day out, isn't it?" he questioned. Sam non-verbally agreed. The minister took out of his side bag a beautifully wrapped double hammock and offered it to Sam. With bags under her eyes from her week-long studying for her exam tomorrow, Sam thanked the minister and set up her hammock, forgetting all about her exam.

Finally, the minister saw Henry. Henry, about to edit his final paper for class saw no other goal in his mind. The minister approached him and tried to enchant him with his wondrous events. From paintball fights to mini golfing, Henry refused all attempts to distract him. The minister, in a time of weakness, tried one last thing to distract Henry. "At 4 there will be pizza here from your favorite shop. You should join us," he invited. Henry, already hungry from the day, was enticed by this offer the most so at 3:30 he left the library and quickly got some pizza from the event before the minister could see him and went back to his work.

The minister saw Henry and began to follow him but as he was unable to leave his allotted space he yelled "we will have ice cream at 5 if you would like to join again." Henry returned at 4:30, got his ice cream, and ran back to the library to finish his work again. The minister was fuming. As 7 approached Henry completed his assignment while Sam and David did not. The minister had won over 2 of them and they were unable to go to their friend's house for movie night.

Author's Note:
I was inspired by the 3 little pigs story and wanted to make it more relevant to my own life. There are a lot of campus ministries that often recruit students so I decided to put them as the "wolf" in my life right now. This is not to say that I think they are evil! I just think the comparison is funny.

  1. Hey Muneeb, this story was amazing! Anyone who has been on OU’s campus for a semester has been terrorized by a sinister minister, and I love how you took that situation and made it a dramatic story. It’s very relatable, many college students can’t resist free food. I honestly didn’t even realize this was mimicking the three little pigs until the author’s note, good job!

  2. Hey Muneeb, I really liked this story! This was a good adaptation of the three little pigs story to the life of a college student and I can definitely relate to the troubles of the protagonists. One thing you might be able to do, is replace the minister character with the ghost of procrastination, a shapeshifting being that haunts all students. This would help avoid any misunderstandings with the minister as the antagonist, and also possibly explain how they come up with different distractions for each student.

  3. Hi Muneeb,
I think your story does a good job of describing two things that most of us can probably relate to: trying to avoid strangers trying to talk to you on campus and being distracted when trying to finish and important assignment. I also think the idea of someone being so dedicated to trying to get someone to come to their event instead of working on school work is funny for some reason. Overall, great story.

  4. Hey Muneeb! I honestly really enjoyed this retelling and found your comparison amusing. Even though I share beliefs with some of the "ministers" around campus, I've often felt the same way when I'm hurrying to class, so I was able to relate to these three students. You took a fun idea and fleshed it out well with motivations and an end goal. Very well done.
