Favorite Place

It's a weird feeling, being five thousand miles away from the place of your birth and four thousand miles away (in the other direction) from where your family lives. Here, in the heart of France where few speak a language I understand and fewer still speak my mother's tongue, I feel at home. People often think I have a few marbles loose when I share with them this feeling, but the truth is it can never be explained. My favorite place is where my heart belongs: Lyon, France. Whether you are here for the football, the food, the silk, or the history, there is no denying the distinct magnetism that the city radiates. You think Paris is romantic because it has a river? Well, Lyon must be twice as nice because it has two! When strolling through the narrow streets and gazing upon the river, I finally understand art. I feel the strokes that Van Gogh delicately produced on Starry Night and the colorful graffiti that members of the French Resistance used to express their undying loyalty. In Lyon, I feel like my true self.

  1. What a beautiful picture of Lyon, Muneeb! Do you think you might want to do a France-related project for this class? The famous characters of French fairy tales could come to life in the Parc de la TĂȘte d'Or! Or whatever else your imagination might dream up, turning Lyon into a place of stories. :-)

  2. It's fun to do the brainstorming for projects because of course there are a gazillion options, and you can enjoy the possibilities for their own sake, even if you are only going to choose one to pursue. :-)
