Week 10 - Reading Notes Part B

Part B of the "Hero Stories" was quite odd to me because of how different the story structures are in Native American culture. Defiance was a big part of the first few stories in this section as we see children defying their father, animals defying nature, and the dead defying the living. There seems to be no need of proper "justice", as the stories emphasize moving on and through all obstacles without a need to reference the past. I think this is a very noble way to examine the world. The stories, or atleast the way they are translated, seem to have little use of literary devices but the plot is extremely volatile so the audience is engaged throughout the telling of the story.

Bibliography: Tales of the North American Indians is a collection of stories translated by Stith Thompson and can be found at MythFolklore Blog.
